القذى هو ما يتكون في العين من رمص وغمص وغيرهما. ويقال هو يُغضي على القذى إذا سكت على الذل والضيم ولم يشكُ. ولا ترد هذه الكلمة إلا في قول الرب يسوع: "لماذا تنظر القذى الذي في عين أخيك، أما الخشبة التي في عينك فلا تفطن لها؟ أم كيف تقول لأخيك: "دعني أخرج القذى من عينك، وها الخشبة في عينك؟ يا مرائي، اخرج أولاً الخشبة من عينك، وحينئذ تبصر جيداً أن تخرج القذى من عين أخيك" (مت 7: 3-5، لو 6: 41و42). والكلمة اليونانية المترجمة "قذى" هي "كارفوس" (Karphos) وتعني شيئاً يابساً أو جافاً، مثل قشة أو شظية صغيرة من الخشب أو القش، أو وبرة من صوف، أو دقائق من التراب أو ما يشبه ذلك. وكان هدف الرب من هذا القول هو المقارنة بين شيء صغير وخشبة كبيرة أو عارضة من العوارض التي تحمل سقف المنزل، تحذيراً من نقد أو لوم أخ لخطأ صغير أو عيب تافه، بينما يكون في الناقد أو اللائم نفسه، عيب كبير أو خطأ صغير أو عيب تافه، بينما يكون في الناقد أو اللائم نفسه، عيب كبير أو خطأ جسيم. ويقول الرب إن من يفعل ذلك، ليس مرائياً فقط، بل أيضاً أشبه بالأعمى الذي لا يستطيع أن يرى الأمور بوضوح يساعده على معاونة أخيه.
